Summer is coming…and so are the weeds

Who would have thought we would be staring down summer so soon.
With daylight savings kicking off at the end of the week it’s clear the warm season is on its way. Unfortunately, with sun comes weeds and Upland is now taking bookings for January onwards for agricultural spraying of pest plants.

Fortunately, weather that’s good for weeds is also good for plants and its now time to get all those native in the ground so they can settle in for summer. Before level 4 the team were working on getting some riparian zones planted in the Rodney area with Kānuka, Flax, Karo, Coprosma and Kaihikatea. Planting is always a very rewarding part of conservation, especially seeing the regeneration flourish over the next few years.

Meanwhile, further south it’s almost nesting season for some of our most precious species. Kokakō are expected to start breeding in early November carrying through into late February. To help conserve this precious species, Callum will be heading to Pirongia Forest Park to get a new bait network established, giving the Kokakō the best chance this season to keep upping their numbers.
